Privacy Policy

Arcus is astrological software for professional practitioners. This policy describes what the application stores, why it stores it, who else can see it, and how to have it removed. It covers the website at arcusastrology.com, the Arcus app for Mac, and the Arcus Astrology app for iPhone.
What is stored
Your account. An email address, and a display name if you provide one. If you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your address, Arcus receives only the relay address Apple generates, and never your real one.
The charts you save. The name, date, time and place of birth for each chart, along with the coordinates of that place, and anything you add to a chart yourself: notes, events, tags, folders, and a photograph if you attach one.
Chart records frequently describe other people, including clients. Treat them as you would any client file. You decide what goes in, and you can delete any of it at any time.
Your settings and workspace. House system, orbs, colours, skin, saved layouts, open tabs, and similar preferences, so your setup follows you between devices.
Crash reports. When something fails, a report is sent describing the error and the state of the app around it, so it can be fixed.
What is not stored
Inside the application there is no analytics, no advertising, no tracking across other websites or apps, and no third-party trackers of any kind. Nothing about you is sold or shared for advertising, and there is no profiling beyond the astrological calculations you ask for.
The website at arcusastrology.com counts visits. It sets no cookies, records no identifier, and cannot follow anyone from one site to another. It can say how many people read a page and which link they arrived from, and nothing at all about who they were. It does not run inside the application.
One typeface, Orpheus Pro, is served by Adobe rather than from our own servers, so Adobe is told the address of the page you are reading and the network address you are reading it from. That is how a hosted font works and it applies to the website and to the application alike. It is used to draw headings and nothing else: it sets no cookie, it is not linked to your account, and Adobe is told nothing about you beyond the request for the font itself. Every other typeface we use is served from our own servers.
Session recording and performance tracing are switched off, so no recording is made of how you move around the app.
If you let the app use your location, it is used to set where you are observing the sky from. Turning coordinates into a place name is the one thing Arcus cannot do on the device, so the coordinates are sent to OpenStreetMap to be named, and nothing identifying you goes with them. You can decline without losing the feature, since a location can also be typed in.
Where astrological calculation happens
Every chart is computed on your own device, by an ephemeris that ships inside the application. Birth details are not sent away to be calculated. The one exception is the birthplace: when you type a place, that text is sent to OpenStreetMap to find its coordinates, without your name or anything else about the chart. The date and time never leave your device at all, and the app continues to work with no network connection at all.
Who else is involved
Arcus uses a small number of services to run, and no others:
- Google Firebase, which provides sign-in, the database holding your charts, storage for photographs you upload, and web hosting.
- Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google, if you use them. They confirm who you are and pass back an identifier and an email address. Your password is never seen by Arcus.
- Sentry, which receives crash reports.
- Plausible, which counts visits. It runs on the website, and on app.arcusastrology.com when you use Arcus in a browser. It does not run in the desktop app or the iPhone app. It stores no cookie and no identifier of any kind, and nothing you type, chart or save is sent to it.
- Wikidata, but only when you ask Arcus to look up a public figure or import dated events for one. That request contains your search terms and nothing about you.
- OpenStreetMap, which turns a place into coordinates. When you type a birthplace, or ask Arcus to use your device location, that place name or those coordinates are sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to be looked up. Nothing about you, the chart, or whose chart it is goes with the request.
- Stripe, which takes payment if you subscribe. Stripe receives your name, email address, billing address and card details, and Arcus never sees or stores your card number. Arcus is told only that an account has paid and until when. No chart, note or birth detail is ever sent to Stripe.
Data is held on Google's servers in the United States.
Who can see your data
Your charts are readable only by your own account. This is enforced by the database itself, not merely by the application: a request carrying anyone else's credentials is refused before it reaches your records.
Nothing you save is published, shared between accounts, or used to train anything.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account and everything in it from inside Arcus, wherever you use it, under Settings, then Account. It removes your charts, notes, events, photographs, settings, and the account itself, and it clears the copy held on the device you are using.
Deletion is immediate and permanent. There is no recovery period, and it cannot be undone by contacting support. Backups holding residual copies are cycled out within 30 days.
If you signed in with Apple, deleting your account also ends Arcus's access to your Apple ID, so Arcus disappears from the list of apps using Sign in with Apple in your Apple settings.
Your rights
You may ask for a copy of what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be erased. Deleting your account in the app does the last of these immediately. For the others, write to the address below and expect a reply within 30 days.
Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to processing or to complain to a data protection authority.
Children
Arcus is professional software and is not directed at children. Accounts are not knowingly created for anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created one, write to the address below and it will be removed.
Retention
What you save is kept until you delete it or delete your account. Crash reports are kept for 90 days and then discarded.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected or who sees it, the date at the top will change and account holders will be told by email before it takes effect.
